Search engine optimisation (SEO)
Titles, descriptions, sitemap, redirects and analytics: helping search engines find your site, and tracking your visits.
Site settings
Open Settings › SEO & Indexation:
- your site’s Default title;
- the Default share image: the image shown when someone shares a page that has no image of its own on a social network, in landscape format, ideally 1,200 × 630 px;
- Allow indexing by search engines and Allow following links: leave them ticked so you can be found;
- Block AI crawlers: asks the crawlers of AI assistants not to read your site.
In Settings › General, the Your business section (legal name, address, company ID, phone, e-mail) describes your business to Google, in the site’s structured data. Everything is optional: an empty field is not published.
Page by page
In the editor, open the SEO tab in the right-hand panel:
- Meta title: the title shown in search results (otherwise, the page’s own), with a character counter under the field;
- Description: if left empty, the page’s first sentence is used;
- Social sharing: the image, title and description shown when someone shares the page on a social network;
- Indexing: Block indexing for a page that must not appear in search engines;
- URL: the page’s File name and the Canonical URL.
Each product has its own SEO tab, and so does each blog post. The Blog page and the Documentation home also have their own title for Google, description and sharing image: Settings button, SEO tab. The Blog page’s description is also shown under its title. For the Shop page, open Shop › Store details, Shop page SEO section. The address of the Shop and the Documentation can also be changed, and old links are redirected automatically.
No keywords
Google has ignored the keywords tag since 2009, and Bing uses it to spot spam. So TOWeb does not offer it, and importing a TOWeb 14 site does not carry it over: focus on the title and description instead.
The site address first
Enter the Site URL in Publish: without it, TOWeb cannot generate the sitemap (sitemap.xml) or the blog’s RSS feed. Remember to add a site icon (favicon) too.
Your blog posts and products in Google
Each blog post publishes its structured data, the information Google reads: its title, summary, date, author and image. Your products publish theirs too.
Blog posts and products are ready for Google Discover, Google’s feed of suggestions on phones: their share image is prepared in a large size (1,200 × 630 px), and Google is allowed to show it large. A smaller image is never enlarged: to benefit, choose a featured image at least 1,200 px wide.
Change sites without losing your visitors
Is your new page replacing one from an old site? In the Page tab, paste the old address into Former addresses of this page: visitors and search engines will be redirected. And when you rename a page, TOWeb remembers its old address on its own.
Let the optimiser check
Each time you publish, the Site optimizer on the Publish screen flags what hurts your search ranking: missing or duplicate titles or descriptions, images without alt text, no main heading, broken links, forgotten placeholder text… When a Fix link comes with a finding, it takes you straight to where you can correct it.
The optimiser reviews the pages in the main language. Automatic translations are not reviewed, since you do not need to touch them up; their links, however, are checked in every language.
Measuring your audience
In Settings › Tracking & Analytics, paste your Google Analytics ID (it starts with G-) or your Google Tag Manager ID. With Google Analytics, your site sends the useful events by itself, with no code to add:
- product viewed, added to cart, checkout started and purchase, with its amount;
- contact form sent and booking confirmed;
- click on your email address or phone number;
- download of an installer (.dmg, .exe…).
With the visitor’s consent
These measurements are only sent once the visitor agrees, in the site’s cookie banner.
Several languages
A translated site declares each of its languages to search engines. See Translating your site.
